Abstract

An analysis and review of Patrick Maley’s after august regarding the topic of blues and how the subject is used in a variety of methods associated with August Wilson’s American Century Cycle and other related works.

Author Biography

Omiyẹmi Artisia Green, William & Mary

Omiyẹmi Artisia Green is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Africana Studies, a W. Taylor Reveley, III Interdisciplinary Faculty Fellow, and director of the Program in Africana Studies at William & Mary. She is a director, dramaturg, and interdisciplinary scholar. In 2014, she was selected to attend the National Endowment for the Humanities Institute, “Black Aesthetics and African Centered Cultural Expressions: Sacred Systems in the Nexus Between Cultural Studies, Religion and Philosophy,” where she further developed her research on Yorùbá methods of aesthetics and performance strategies. She is published in Continuum: The Journal of African Diaspora Drama, Theatre and Performance, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society Journal Peer Review Section, and in August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle: Critical Perspectives on the Plays (McFarland), and African American Culture: From Dashikis to Yoruba (Greenwood - forthcoming). Omiyẹmi directed the play “Hoodoo Love” for the ETA Creative Arts Foundation in Chicago, which earned her a 2013 Best Direction nomination from the Black Theatre Alliance Awards. From 2007 to 2014, she was an executive board member of the Black Theatre Network, also serving as president from 2010 to 2012. She was an Educational Coordinator for the August Wilson Society from 2016-2018 and is currently co-chairing the organizing committee for the 2020 August Wilson Lecture Series. Omiyẹmi is a member-at-large on the Black Theatre Association Executive Board (ATHE), an associate editor of Continuum, and is a resident dramaturg with Cadence Theatre Company in Richmond, Virginia.
